Why I’m Here (Poem)

Illustrated by Lisa Ferrante, Inspired/Guided by Alana Fairchild

Since when I was a teenager
I’ve been asking myself, repeatedly
Why I’m here

In this room, in this house
On this street, in this city
In this country, on this planet

To be happy? To make others happy?
To help others? To be helped by others?
To serve as a good daughter, wife, or mother?
To be a legend? Or to be part of a legend?

Imagine yourself, standing a distance away, like the moon
From there, look down on earth
You find a glowing substance housed in an earthly-suit
With ever-changing intensity

Look, when being content, joyful, and tranquil
Aligned with the purpose of Being
It shoots out a beam of light, piercing through the darkness
Even to the moon
